Mysql starts and suddendly stops

I compiled mysql 4 according to proper instructions or so I think.

Then I start it and I get

mysqld_safe &
[1] 7221
root@XX YYY # Starting mysqld daemon with databases from /var/lib/mysql
STOPPING server from pid file /var/lib/mysql/net.pid
050311 15:14:56 mysqld ended

I downloaded also the prepackaged LAMPP from apachefriends.

There msql starts but I cannot connect to it.

I'm on a 686, linux yoper, kernel 2.6.10 (it is not a kernel matter, I get the same with standard kernels and previous versions)

There is a procedure to create an initial database, which I can't recall offhand. Without the initial setup, MySQL will shut down right after it starts. There should be instructions for this at the end of the compile instructions?

That's /usr/bin/mysql_install_db

I executed it both as root and as common user. No way.

In the future, post your log files which usually would have told you this that it was a permissions issue. By default, usually the /var/lib/mysql isn't owned by mysql and changing that fixes the issue.
