MySQL service is not starting in Redhat AS 4.0

Dear All,

I have installed MySQL 5.0.19 in Redhat AS 4.0.

But if I start the mysql service its showing "Failed" error message.

[root@MySQL ~]# service mysql start
Starting MySQL................................... [FAILED]
[root@MySQL ~]#

I tired so many times. Then also its showing the same error.

in my /var/lib/mysql directory. mysql.socket file is not there.. How can I create that file.??

[root@MySQL mysql]# ls -l
total 24
drwx--x--x 2 mysql mysql 4096 Apr 29 04:34 mysql
-rw-rw---- 1 mysql mysql 693 Apr 29 05:33 MySQL.localdomain.err
drwxr-xr-x 2 mysql mysql 4096 Apr 29 04:34 test
[root@MySQL mysql]#

Thanks in Advance

Cheers
Rav

What do you see in /var/lib/mysql/MySQL.localdomain.err ?

What are the permissions on the directory /var/lib/mysql? mysql has to have write permissions to create the socket mysql.sock (and you don't create, mysql will on successful startup).
