Ughhh I hate when people just say "I fixed it" and don't share with others on how they solved it
I'm trying to figure this same error out.. and can't do anything... ugh..

I too hate when people don't post their fix when they find it. -- so i try to not do that

I had run into a similar problem, I am running Ubuntu [Hoary] and installed the MySQL packags through synaptics / apt-get ... anyway durring the setup scripts ... the root@localhost password [mysql] got set to something like db_user_password -- when i fingured this out from the ubuntu unoffical guide -it tells you to type this, though i had not used this - i tried it as a password and bah-da bing.

For anyone else wrestling with the also try using the other root account ie mysql -u root@HOSTNAME
this one worked for me too.
