MySQL Problem starting server

I used to run mysql with redhat without any problems. I'm now using slackware, so I installed the binaries instead. I followed the directions in their manual. After installing, I tested the database with the following command:
safe_mysqld --user=mysql &

I get the following output:
Starting mysqld daemon with databases from /var/lib/mysql
021126 03:09:53 mysqld ended

this is mysql-standard-4.0.5-beta-pc-linux-i686. I tried a different version and I got similar results. Anyone know what's going on?
