Mysql problem - can`t connect to socket

what`s wrong here?

Code:
root@ticko:/usr/local/mysql/mysql-standard-4.0.18-pc-linux-i686# mysqladmin -u root password mypass123
mysqladmin: connect to server at 'localhost' failed
error: 'Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/run/mysql/mysql.sock' (2)'
Check that mysqld is running and that the socket: '/var/run/mysql/mysql.sock' exists!
i can`t set up my mysql database on Slackware linux.
I read a houndrets of manuals, and how to`s but i am just stupid or i don`t know....... Why is so hard to set up mysql database? I am setting it up about 1 month and i am still not make it..

And had anybody have some really good tutorial or how to....of making (setting up) mysql database please post it here...

thanks

yes, to re-iterate, MySQL is a client-server application.

you need to make sure the server is running first before attempting to use the client.

from a brand new installation, you also need to set up the whole thing by running the 'mysql_install_db' script first. then you should be able to start the server by typing 'safe_mysqld --user=root &' (note that the mysql root user should ** not ** be confused with the linux root user!!)

once the server is started, you can connect to it.

if you still run into trouble, it could well be a permissions issue.

ah,

in this case, it's possible the server daemon is already running. perhaps you could check the log file (/should be /var/log/mysql/mysqld.log) and post back (preferably with contents of said file)?

cheers.

Code:
bash-2.05b# safe_mysqld status
Starting mysqld daemon with databases from /usr/local/mysql/mysql-standard-4.0.18-pc-linux-i686/data
040522 22:20:31 mysqld ended
hmmm...i was thinking. The best way to set up my base is that i delete al bases i have instaled on my computer and all of that stuff...then i can instal only one and set it up under one good how to, because i am going crazy because it. I can understand that is this so hard, because only in this distro is all pervect for me only this mysql in fucked up. i don know if i am soo stupid or it is really hard to set it up... i was thinking to reinstall linux (the whole slackware), but i have relly nice uptime and for now i don t want to do that.

How can i find where all is intalled or where is located mysql in my compuiter?
I have deleted for now mysql from pkgtool, and when i use search tool it fins 300+ files of mysql.
