if u have set a password for root u might connect to mysql(shell) by typing
/path/2/mysql -u root -p
then u are prompted a password
if u havnt set a password for root type
/path/2/mysql -u root
to login to mysql(shell)

then
mysql:use yourdb;
mysql:grant all on yourdb to someone identified by 'passwd';

where someone is ur user,yourdb is the name of the db.

that should do - or did i get u wrong?
cheers, jens

What do you mean ' the only thing that will work is no password.'?

I'm thinking that perhaps you need to give some priveleges to your user inetcount. The default might include not allowing you to create databases and tables and so forth.

as i tried to say mysql controls access and rights in a db named mysql that consists of several tables storing users, privileges and so on.
u dont need no sort of interface to administer users. simply login to mysql as root and type
grant someprivilege on db to someone identified by 'passw';
