Question Mysql - phpMyadmin questions

RH 8 - MySQL 3.23.52 - PHP 4.2.2 - phpMyAdmin-2.5.5-pl1

I have read and re-read the Documentation.txt file that comes with phpMyadmin on how to install and start it. Having difficulties getting access.

So far the only way I can get the phpMyadmin page to even come up is if I set auth_type to config. I know its unsafe but I just want to get it work at any rate, then I can set to http or cookie. When the phpMyadmin page comes up it shows as no priviledges, it won't allow me to create any dbs.

This is with 'user' set to mysql with no password. I never setup a password for the mysql 'mysql' user. I apparently need to do that. Anyone know how?

I have looked at others files and see they have theirs set with 'user' as root, not mysql. Which is the best way to go?

I leave my user id set to root. But, you can setup a new user id and password with global priveleges and use the user id instead. You want to use the file to setup the user id and password
