Question mysql <> phpmyadmin error

I installed MySQL 5.0.0 on a test server and also installed Apache 2 with php modules.

Then i installed phpmyadmin tool. Ive used this tool before on another machine and got it to work just fine, however the MySQL server on that machine is the standard one delivered with rh.

I have set the authentication in the phpmyadmin config file to all 3 options, and none of them work. When i use 'config' as authentication i get a clear error :

#1250 - Client does not support authentication protocol requested by server; consider upgrading MySQL client

But i cant seem to find any information on this.

When i try to login from the shell it goes just fine and i can access the MySQL 5.0.0 db. So my guess would be that the phpmyadmin wont work with MySQL 5.0.0.

Does anyone happen to know whether this mission im on will be a complete failure because (for example) MySQL 5.0.0 in combination with phpmyadmin wont work.
Or maybe have some helpfull tips ?

Thanx in advance.

With best regards,
