MySQL php database and financial stuff

We are developing a new database at work using MySQL and PHP. The programmer is doing a great job and we'll soon be able to switch off our old MS Access 97 database. I have a query though....
We are looking at the financial aspect of our company. Generation of invoices and agent commissions can easily be handled by MySQL PHP but are we going down the wrong path if we try to develop a system that deals with all of our finances - both our transactions and our accounts. Would we be better looking at a commercial product such as SAGE? One of the driving forces behind changes to our database system and general use of IT is to try to cut accountancy costs in general - this is all done out of our company (and it's EXPENSIVE!)

Personally, I think MySQL would be fine for this, especially the newest version.
