MYSQL on Slackware9.0 ./mysqld: Can't change dir to '/var/lib/mysql/' (Errcode: 13)

Been messing with this for days now so maybe i need a little help.Trying to get mysql4.0.14 to work on my slack machine. Keep receiving the error ./mysqld: Can't change dir to '/var/lib/mysql/' (Errcode: 13)

you have run mysql_install_db, right?
changed group and ownership for /var/lib/mysql to mysql recusively?
