Mysql -- Grant tables not installed & Innodb configuration

I am trying to install MySQL 5.1.11-beta on Slackware 10.2. I have 2 problems.

1) I installed 5.1.11 several times and it ran. Now since i have beentrying to get innodb to work with mysql suddenly when i run msyql_install_db i get an error "Grant tables not installed".

2) I also need to know how to get innodb to work. I have followed the instructions in the online manual (i think). Yet I must be doing something wrong, or not doing something necessary to use innodb. I have tried command line and mysqladminstrator with no luck. Tables always default to MyISAM even when i specify innodb.

Thanks in advance,
Tom
