Cool mysql disaster.....well, If I could get going !

Please excuse my ignorance.....I'm a complete newbie....

I am learning about php and mysql.
Having installed mysql off my home directory I can run the 'safe_mysqld &' etc and all seems to be well.
However, when I try the test php file I get the following error:

fatal error: call to undefined function: mysql_connect()

is there somewhere I have to tell the Apache web server where to look for the database.....or have I just installed mysql incorrectly......where should it go........it's all gone wrong....

you need to installl the php_mysql features. It looks like php doesn't know what your trying to do. If you are using RedHat look for the php-mysql-xxx.rpm and install that.

thankyou so much......feel like I've finally got over the first hurdle.
However, I'm now presented with:

Warning: mysql_connect() [function.mysql-connect]: Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock' (2)

....any ideas

many thanks once again.

Ok you need to start the mysql server now. If your running RedHat its :
service mysqld start
or service mysql start

Let me know if you need anything else.
