mysql connecting problem

when i installed it, everything seemed to work out fine, as always, and when i tried to start it up it said it couldn't connect to mysql.sock in /tmp/mysql.sock i've checked in the tmp folder and it is in there, so it just won't connect. is there something i can do to fix this?

take the steps detailed in this post and verify your mysqld daemon is running before trying to connect

i tried all the steps and this is what i got

mysqladmin: connect to server at 'localhost' failed
error: 'Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/tmp/mysql.sock' (2)'
Check that mysqld is running and that the socket: '/tmp/mysql.sock' exists!
