My ubuntu has become garbage for some reason
 

When I first installed ubuntu on my Acer Aspire one, it was the best OS I had ever installed. It was lightning-fast, and it never failed. I did a couple of mods onm Firefox and everything was savvy. Then, I upgraded to JJ and everything was even better. There were no errors whatsoever. Then, for some reason, about 2 weeks later, everything started failing. firefox returned to default anbd is now incredibly slow, the LED for the internet does not work, it crashed all the time, it overheats, the battery lasts less, pages with a lot of images can't be loaded and it takes FOREVER to boot.

Please, any help?

I started with Jaunty Jackalope and upgraded to Intrepid Ibex.

jaunty is 9.04 and intrepid is 8.10... you said you "upgraded?" I'm confused as to how that works... is it even possible to downgrade like that from synaptic?

What did you do to Firefox that made it slow?

Your computer has an LED for Internet? I have to ask because I've never seen that kind of LED.

When you say the it crashed all the time what are you talking about? Firefox? Ubuntu? What kind of crash?

You say the battery lasts less, right? Are you talking about a notebook computer? And you say the computer overheats, right? Maybe you should check the cooling fans to see whether they are working.

I can't even guess what might be causing all these problems. I've been using Kubuntu relatively trouble free for years now, and so have a lot of other people. Given so little information to work with, it's really hard to make any kind of helpful reply to your request for assistance.

From 8.10 to 9.04. I confused those to for some reason.

And it's a netbook. The battery problem is probably unrelated to the OS, but the fan thing probably isn't. I ran a thing called Acerfand that turns the fan on and off, and it worked fine at first, but it no longer does.

And it crashed whenever i open pages like, say, facebook. By "crashes" I mean have to force quit on firefox.

If the cooling fans aren't working, as you suggest, then that definitely explains your overheating problem. Overheating can be the cause of many problems, including crashes. Get those fans fixed if you want to keep using this computer.

I'd say the firefox thing is a plugin issue or a firefox issue. Try the beta, it might fix the problem. Alternatively, try Konqueror or Opera on facebook.

Nice detective work, farslayer! Just hope for the OP's sake that his computer isn't already severely damaged as the article suggests can happen.
