My Ubuntu 6.06's Totem got Chinese Encoding Problem.
 

Some of my music files created in Windows (MP3, WMA etc) has a Chinese name file that can be play but the filename will not display correctly. Others music file are perfectly all right. I did install Chinese version of Ubuntu for my uses and codecs (To play MP3, WMA files).
Interesting enough is that when you look for the file by opening the location, the application shows the filename correctly. (It is as if that you open Musics or rather My Musics, an explorer come out, showing the Chinese word correctly but once you double-click the file, a media player come out and gives a rubbish code that human would not understand one.)

Totem uses lame to play mp3 files ... try converting them to ogg/vorbis format first.
(This is a good idea anyway.)

There are character encoding issues with windows.
Have you tried totem with files created in linux?

Yes-I tried them.
 

Only most of the Windows created music file would have such problem.
Linux created music file will not have such problem.

Right: you are having this problem because windows is not properly following the standard while linux is (this is normal). WMP knows how to interpret the files, totem doesn't. Further - MS will keep changing how the depart from standard. It is a form of vendor lockin.

However, if you are using totem-gstreamer, you may want to try totem-xine. It seems to have better support for proprietary stuff and is more tolerant to departures from standards.

sudo aptitude install totem-xine

WMP11, AFAIK, will play ogg/vorbis and ogg/theora files with a plugin. I think RealPlayer handles them too. Personally I stopped using WMP at version 8, when it started truncating mp3 files exported to my PDA in wma format. After learning about open source I discovered ogg formats and never looked back. I use only ogg, flacc and a bit of wav.

I convert proprietary media to free ogg/theora/vorbis with the ffmpeg2theora utility.

sudo aptitude install ffmpeg2theora

Use: cd into the media directory:

ffmpeg2theora myfile.mp3

... and you get a new file, myfile.ogg. Play that.

No I used Totem-Xine
 

I used the latest Totem-Xine. Anyway, only when it play the music and after playing that particular music, this encoding would happen.Before it plays, even if I add into the playlist (Which is going to be played later), most likely (but not all) will show the word correctly.
I did copy the Microsoft Fonts and install lots of extra fonts. Why it still failed to work as it should?
