No, I don't think I have my volume muted; unless alsamixer is lying to me.
Here's the story: I've got an audigy ls. Fedora Core 3 didn't recognize it out of the box, but I downloaded the lastest ALSA drivers, built and installed them, ran alsaconfig to modify my /etc/modprobe.conf, ran alsamixer and turned my volume up, restarted the sound server from kde's control centre... and everything worked great! I was happy!
...I restarted my machine; during boot Fedora told me that it recognized new hardware and asked me if I wanted it to auto-configure it. I said "no, ignore and don't ask me again" because it was already working great. Well, when I logged in again, my sounds not working! The soundcard is still recognized when I run "Soundcard detection" from the kde menu. It's as if it's muted somehow... anyone know what the deal is?
This is my modprobe.conf :
Code:
alias eth0 sk98lin
alias eth1 forcedeth
alias usb-controller ehci-hcd
alias usb-controller1 ohci-hcd
alias ieee1394-controller ohci1394
# --- BEGIN: Generated by ALSACONF, do not edit. ---
# --- ALSACONF verion @VERSION@ ---
alias snd-card-0 snd-ca0106
alias sound-slot-0 snd-ca0106
# --- END: Generated by ALSACONF, do not edit. ---
Did you unmute the channels in alsamixer? Itll have an M next to the channel if it is press m to unmute.
Did you run alsactl store as root? if you didnt alsamixer sets the channels back to nothing
I tried modprobe-ing again, but it didn't seem to help.
I ran alsamixer again but nothing was muted and every is up full blast.
I hadn't run "alsactl store" before, but I just tried it and it didn't help. (What does this do? Store the alsamixer's volume control settings?)
XMMS was "playing" songs before, (I could see the little visualization), but after running "test sound" in the kde control centre sound server gui, XMMS now says "Couldn't open audio: check that the sound card isn't busy, etc etc"
Opem xmms-options-prefrences-and make sure the output plug-in is alsa.
When you did modprobe and nothing happened thats good, means the module is loaded.

After modprobeing did ya update modules where the above question marks are??
debian its "update-modules"
Hmm, when I open xmms' preferences, the alsa output plugin isn't even available from the combo box. It's OSS right now. This is strange, because it was working like this, before. Could it be that something is muting my sound other than alsamixer?
Alsa, I'm using OSS as the "audio device" in the hardware tab in KDE's control centre.
Thanks for the help so far. Any other suggestions? No music is starting to drive me insane!

No I don't think I updated the modules. I'm running Fedora Core 3, I'll try to find how to do it in redhat...
But like I said, the frustrating thing is that it _WAS_ working, but when I restarted my computer it broke itself. Some sort of change didn't make itself permanent..
