"My network places"

Hi there!
I am wondering if there is such thing like winbloze's "My network places" in Linux?

acid_kewpie 10-09-2002 03:01 PM

in what sense? the guts of it is samba. and if you're not up to using linux properly yet there are naff windowsesque frontends like linneighborhood

There are several, doing a simple goolge search will turn up at least ten of them.

I personally use LIsa, it comes with TedHat, and Mandrake, and I may be wrong but might be part of KDE. It uses Konqueror to view the whole network.

If you want to get it going, you will need to log in as root, and go to the KDE control center, clcik on Network, then Lan Browsing, set the proper IP numbers in the perspective boxes and save it, if samba is already running then just open a terminal and type lisa.

Then in Konquerer in the left pane window clcik the little star it may be a different icon in your distro, the LAN is there, you can drag and link it to the desktop.

If you want it to load automatically when linux boots up, in Redhat I jsut add the line lisa -c /etc/lisarc to the /etc/rc.d/rc.local file. Again this may be different for your distro.

If you want IP's of the other machines to be associated with their names, add them to the lmhosts file. They should look like this BillyBob 192.168.0.76

I may have left something out but that is what I use and nothing else. Konquerer is the best way in KDE I have found to browse my windows shares, and LIsa automates it all.

I have configured network in kControl, but konqueror says could not connect to server

is samba running?

did you open a terminal and simply type lisa?

nautilus_1987 10-12-2002 06:14 AM

Samba is not running, I type lisa -c

acid_kewpie 10-12-2002 07:18 AM

so start samba....

nautilus_1987 10-13-2002 05:05 AM

It is a pitty that LIsa won't work without Samba :(

acid_kewpie 10-13-2002 06:34 AM

no it's not. list is presumably some lame GUI, while samba is a hugely complex and powerful thing, with vast tomes of information written about it. lisa does next to nothing. learn some samba

BruceCadieux 10-13-2002 07:50 AM

He's right LIsa is nothing but a method of veiwing Samba shares. Samba is the tool, LIsa is just an interface.

Get Samba going or you are just wasting your time trying to use any GUI tool to see windows shares.

It's a shame my car doesn't work when it's not got an engine in it!
There's also Gnomba that, I think, comes as a default part of Gnome.
