My Mozilla/Java nightmare...
Hi
I swear this is becoming like some kind of month-long "quest" (or obscession) and I have tried everything you can possibly imagine and still no luck. I want to get Java working so unbelievably bad because I like to play games (especially pool) and use the chatrooms on Yahoo. Here's what I have to work with...
* Fedora Linux (Core 1#)
* Gnome (my default desktop)
* Mozilla 1.4.1
I have tried Sun's Java RPM and BIN files, I've tried Blackdown Java, I've tried using various versions of Mozilla installed both locally (in my home folder) and under root and I have also gone to a page that uses Java and just allowed the plugin to install automatically. I've tried installing Java into the Mozilla plugin folder as well as outside of the Mozilla folder altogether as well as different combinations of Java/Mozilla versions, install folders, etc, etc, etc.
I have been through HELL with this!.
Basically, I need someone to hold my hand and tell me exactly what to do...step by tiny step. For example, I need to have a link where I can find the correct Java file, I need to know exactly where to install it and exactly what to do with after I've installed it (ie; I have NO idea how to create a symbolic link, etc).
I would sure appreciate this and would be happy to provide whatever information you need with respect to my system, it's structure, where I have various things installed, how it is configured, terminal outputs, etc.
Please help me finally get Java installed before I have a MAJOR heart attack over this or something.
Thank you!!!!!!

Open Mozilla and go to Help then About Plugins. That will tell you what is installed, if anything. There is a link at the top kind of on the left on mine, I use 1.5, click on it then on that page click the word "Linux" in the top portion. Do not click the one under Documentation, yet. You should get a page that will tell you what is working and a link to where to download the program. Scroll down the page to see them all.
If you need to you can go back and click the Documentation link. To link a file it is usually something like this.
Code:
ln -s /path/to/original/file /path/to/where/you/want/the/link
The link usually goes into /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins. The mozilla may also have a version number sometimes. You will need to check to make sure.
Post back if you have trouble. Take it one step at a time and it will not seem so hard. I have installed Gentoo. It looks impossable, till you just take it one step at a time. Then it is

Which Java from Sun did you download.
I used the j2re rpm, then you link to the the following file /usr/java/j2re1.4.2_02/plugin/i386/ns610-gcc32/libjavaplugin_oji.so
If you have any questions just post again
PS. Link just the way that dalek posted, I believe the path for the Mozilla you are using is /usr/lib/mozilla-1.4.1/plugins
