my linuxbox has gone so slow :(

my linux box(redhat 9.0) has gone so slow.i looked in the system monitor is that the best place to look in when it goes slow??)
it came up with two instances of vim(each taking up 43% of the cpu), at the moment i only have the system monitor and one instance of mozilla going.

the system monitor shows
vim
vim
gnome-system-minotr
and
it shows at times
keventd or X or python or screensaver or a combination of them.

please help me

Do you need vim running? What are you running in vim? If you kill one or both vims, will your system run better? You can also monitor your system with "top", just type it into a terminal window.

Basically you don't see it but programs launched there still eats ram and cpu.

Well, i think that if you have some spare time you should read for example The Linux Cookbook . You'll clarify a lot of things ( i suggest you to do so after i read it a lot of times ago and it helped me greatly ).
