well, the kde desktop is provided by the program "kdesktop". if you have a virtual terminal, or still have the kde kicker menu, you could try running kdestop manually.

It seams that kdesktop is started automatically from /usr/share/autostart folder. .desktopfiles are like program shortcut files. This is a long shot, but it might work if you recreate the kdesktop.desktop program shortcut (you can do that once you get your desktop up and running again. Right click - > create new -> application shortcut), and then place it in /usr/share/autostart/

here's what I typed to find the autostart folder. It should be in the same spot.
[tim@tim share]$ locate autostart
/usr/share/autostart
/usr/share/autostart/kbluetoothd.autostart.desktop
/usr/share/autostart/kalarm.tray.desktop
/usr/share/autostart/kdesktop.desktop
/usr/share/autostart/konqy_preload.desktop
/usr/share/autostart/kgpg.desktop
/usr/share/autostart/irkick.desktop
/usr/share/autostart/khotkeys.desktop
/usr/share/autostart/restore_kmix_volumes.desktop
/usr/share/autostart/kab2kabc.desktop
/usr/share/autostart/ktip.desktop
/usr/share/autostart/panel.desktop
/usr/share/autostart/korgac.desktop
/usr/share/autostart/klipper.desktop
/usr/share/autostart/kalarmd.autostart.desktop
/usr/share/autostart
/usr/share/apps/kdesktop/directory.autostart

good luck
