Question My computer is taking more than 4 hours to install linux

My computer is taking more than 4 hours time to install Linux
operating system. Debian(kernel-2.6.18), Ubuntu (version 6.06) , Fedora core 5 all are taking more than 4 hours to install. Only Fedora core 4 took normal time( 35 minutes ).I have Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo Desktop Processor, Intel® Desktop Board D945GCCR motherboard and I have 1Gb ram.
In all of the above cases I instaled from DVD/CD, and I have a HP DVD writer
----------------------------
I would like to mention that when I try with the same DVD in another machine it works fine.
and again when I install Windows XP using the same DVD writer it takes only 15 minutes to install.

More information?

Hi sahusandi.

Could you provide some more information? Are you doing a network install or installing from a CD/DVD? I've had "slow" installs before, usually when a CD/DVD-ROM Drive was going bad.

You might also specify where in the process the install seems to "hang" or slow down dramatically and where it seems to be running normally. Even on old equipment, which you do not have, most distribution binaries should install in an hour or less (not counting updates, which can take a long time).

Take a look at the media

Greetings Again.

I would take a look at the media. I know Ubuntu has this feature, but after you burn an ISO on to a CD/DVD go ahead and check the disc. There's an option to make sure the media burned correctly based on a checksum. As I said before, I've had multiple installs go bad when I used media that was not burned correctly or when something was wrong with the hardware. If you find this is an issue, make sure to look at your burn speeds on media and make sure there is nothing wrong with your CD/DVD ROM drive. Maybe try burning the media on a friend's machine as a test and see if that makes a difference. Also, for whatever reason, I've had more problems with RWs than with Rs for installs.

Cool

Cogar has strong point. During the install, it is possible for Distro to go online and attempt update the files to the current files. Yes, this takes long time. Happens to me when I let my router stay online during fresh install. Suggestion: A) Watch the "key pressing" during the installation. When asked for CD-ROM or Network additional files, choose the CD-ROM. B) Turn off the router/modem during the installation. Hope this helps.
