My ClamAV installation is saying its outdated Ubuntu 16.04 and I don't know how to update it

I get this when I try to update ClamAV:
Message:

Sun Jun 30 14:42:26 2019 -> bytecode.cld is up to date (version: 328, sigs: 94, f-level: 63, builder: neo)

I tried some of the tips on https://www.clamav.net/documents/upgrading-clamav and didn't get far. I have no experience installing a program from source. I have a few friends who know Linux but I was hoping to try this forum first.

Which "tips" did you try?

Is Ubuntu 16.04 a current release?
On CentOS 7 the lag between an update of ClamAV and an update in the repository is 2-3 days. I've stopped trying to do ClamAV updates manually and just wait for the repository update to happen.

Maybe someone else knows the specifics for Ubuntu

I tried a command to see if I had more than one instance of ClamAV installed

$ whereis freshclam

$ whereis clamscan

I also ran
$ ldd $(which freshclam)

but I didn't understand the results. Maybe I can Google that command.

Note that "outdated" doesn't mean "not working" -- just doesn't have the latest updates to the application.
Your virus definitions are all up to date. As the web page says, Wait may be your best option.

No, Ubuntu 16.04 LTS is not the current Ubuntu release. That would you be Ubuntu 18.04 LTS.

18.04 (Bionic Beaver) is the latest LTS release, 19.04 (Disco Dingo) is the current one (but that is a short term release) and 20.04 shall be the next LTS release.
But anyway, ClamAV is not complaining about your Ubuntu release but about ClamAV itself, there's a newer version which you can download from www.clamav.net/downloads.
I don't know if there's a 16.04 .deb package of that in your repo's.

Sorry I was stuck in 2018 and I pay little attention to the short term Ubuntu releases. I understand ClamAV is notifying me about itself I just wanted to answer the previous question. I’ll have to check if the software center has a newer ClamAV. What do you, “ ehartman“, mean if a newer .deb is my repo’s? I thought you get .debs from websites.

As 16.04 is an LTS release, the updates for it may include a newer version of ClamAV. Our local (university) mirror doesn't carry the updates and as I'm not running Ubuntu myself I cannot check this. The website does carry updates but probably only for 18.04, which you aren't using.
The website (for ClamAV) does mention:
Quote:
The Ubuntu backports repository will contain the newest clamav version that has been at least lightly tested to work with that version. These packages can be installed by enabling the backports repository on your system.
Ubuntu packages are maintained by Ubuntu MOTU Developers.
Again, as I do not use Ubuntu myself and it's been years since I last had to work with it, I cannot tell you how that works.
My last experiences with Ubuntu were with the 14.04 release.

What are the repos? That's my question. I've used Linux for 8 years but I'm still a noob.
Do you mean stuff like the Ubuntu Software Center or more like Synaptic Package Manager/apt-get?

I think that Synaptic is a front end for apt-get. That's what I know. I'm unfamiliar with backports.

repo's (of full: Package repositories) are the sites aptitude (or apt-get) get their packages from. There are multiple ones (like "Main", "restricted" and "updates") and this backports one seems to be another one.
Repositories are essential a collection of packages for a specific release of a specific distribution (in your case 16.04 (Xenial Xerus) of Ubuntu (and its derivations like kubuntu, xubuntu etc). They are mirrored to several sites as to spread the load.
See this wiki help.ubuntu.com/community/Repositories/Ubuntu

The sites YOU use are configured in config files in /etc.
Quote:
Configuration of the Advanced Packaging Tool (APT) system repositories is stored in the /etc/apt/sources.list file and the /etc/apt/sources.list.d directory.
It is possible to extend the list with other repo's, but that's about where my knowledge of Debian-like distro's end, I've worked more with rpm-based ones.

0.100.3 is the correct and supported version of clam for Ubuntu 16.04 according to:

https://packages.ubuntu.com/xenial/clamav

No action on your part is necessary, other than to continue to run Ubuntu updates (as you clearly have been doing).

Indeed, the next line suggests, "DON'T PANIC!"

Ubuntu 16.04 will be fully supported until April 2021.

All these replies have been helpful. At least by giving me a different way to look at things and exposing me to keywords.

snowpine, I don’t think updating Ubuntu updates my antivirus.

I have to update clamav by cli.

I’m going to repeat...just wait. The AV will (probably) update via the repos soon. Once you start doing it yourself “via tha cli”, you’ll always have to do it yourself...it will never be automatic again...BTDT.

Again: “not current” does NOT mean not working...

Are you sure about that? According to https://www.clamav.net/downloads the latest Clam release was on 3/26 of this year. And according to the changelog http://changelogs.ubuntu.com/changel...04.1/changelog there was an Ubuntu security update to the clamav package on 4/4 that closed 3 open vulnerabilities.

So it seems to me, Ubuntu is giving you timely security updates to clamav (within about 1 week of the "upstream" developer) and @scasey's "just wait" is sound advice.

I’ve been updating ClamAV by cli for like 2 years now per instructions I got from Linux Lite OS’s site.
How do I make it so I get updates when I update Ubuntu? Would reinstalling my antivirus do the job?
