Mutt - which webmail providers work well with it as of 2021?

All in the heading there but despite more glamorous options I've using Mutt for email increasingly, on my three deliberately bling-free systems. For a long while I could not get Gmail to work with it but now it is. My main email address is with Yandex, and I have ones with Yahoo and Protonmail. I wouldn't expect Protonmail to work with Mutt and I haven't found Yahoo to work, despite modelling my config file on the Gmail one.

If someone here is using Mutt and has found providers that work with it without issue I'd be pleased to hear of which ones they are, ideally with an obviously redacted copy of your config if at all possible.

(I'm using Debian 10.7 built on the netinstall with an Openbox setup that's 9/10ths of the way to LXDE.)

Thanks.

Find the settings for smtp and pop3 or IMAP. Ask your mail-provider for this information. If there are smtp, pop3 and/or IMAP servers, Mutt will work with them.

On the other hand, Mutt is not originally meant to be an MTA. The same problems and solutions apply for any software using the protocols of the mail-system.

What in the configuration for GMail you think could be usable with other mail-providers? Server-IPs, ports, authentication methods and even the supported protocols may differ from one provider to another. You must get this information from the service, their web-site or some support agent.

I have found that msmtp works very nicely with Mutt.

You had me at « simple and easy to use ».
Now how do we squeeze this into the context of the OP ...

Most good web mail servers support standards. The ones that do can be used with any standards compliant client (including MUTT)
POP3 or POP3s along with SMTP or SMTPS will work. IMAP or Secure IMAP will work.

Certain http/https only web interface systems are at issue, they will not generally work well with clients BY DESIGN. Those are the ones that are problematic, but those are often also ones that have that design requirement so that they might more efficiently collect data about the users and usage. Personally, I avoid those as a matter of policy. If you are constrained to using one, then it is likely that no standards compliant client will work for you. (There may be a client specific to that platform, you would have to investigate that with the vendor.)

At one time I used MUTT with hotmail (well prior to the purchase by Microsoft), Yahoo, Angelfire, and a couple of others that no longer exist. With time, the add supported ones locked down to one extent or another. Check the FAQ at the site, if client access is supported it may have a paragraph about remote client support with a pointer to settings on the help pages. (GMAIL was standards compliant last I checked, and could use standard clients like MUTT or Fetchmail, but does require the encrypted protocols. This is a good thing. I have not used it other than through the Android app for four years or more, so my information may be dated.)
