Music playing high processor usage in FC3
Just installed Fedora Core 3 on my dual PII400 machine. A strange thing occured. Playing mp3's or other music with xmms (or rhythmbox) takes something between 50%-100% from both processors and the music pops and slows down and so on.

Nothing like that happened with FC1, which I upgraded. My soundcard is es1370 compatible.

Any ideas, what to do. I have already updated all packages...

In my opinion mplayer offers the best performance, followed by xmms. What is the audio output you're using with xmms? Try to change from OSS to ALSA or the opposite. It may also be the sound server (if any) which reduces the performance.

Also, what is the kernel version? I noticed that with newest 2.6 kernels on slow machines (Pentium 1/2 class) the mp3 playback performance reduces twice. On my older P1 -120 an MP3 typically uses ~25-30 % CPU time with 2.4 kernel. With 2.6.9 however it uses 60 to 70 % for the same mp3! I don't know if this has something to do with preemptible kernel and other options like this.
