music creation software for linux
anyone know of any good free or close to not costing much music creation software for linux? i know about audacity but that seems to me more of an editor than something i could compose something on. any good software for composing out there?

Audacity is more stable but Ardour has more features. I recomend you check the both out. Just keep in mind this is not a giant corperation like calkwalk/sonar.

jack audio connection kit
ladcca session management
ladspa for effects
ardour for recording sound
muse for recording midi

rosegarden is a Qt alternative to muse
ecasound with it's tk/tcl frontend for recording is a viable but really different alternative to ardour
ecasound has a effects pedal for input effects that can use ladspa

there is a drum machine named hydrogen that can do alot if you have the patients for it (like all drum machines)

Although it's not Linux specific, I thought I might mention FL Studio . I've heard it runs well through WINE but I've never tried it myself. They do have some documentation about Linux use on their site. It's a decent app, atleast for what I do with it, and it's fairly inexpensive. Just thought I'd throw the idea out there...

Edit* some day i'll learn to spell things like throw....

I haven't tried this out yet but it looks pretty slick:

Although this is more of an editor, you might be interested in terminatorX:

i think what you really want is LMMS its a free alternative to FL Studio and is really great, i have used an ealier version of this on a Fedora 4 system and was happy with it and it looks like its improved greatly. check out the lmms page on sourceforge and have fun
