I'd forgotten AV Linux. That is lighter than Ubuntu Studio, using LXDE rather than Xfce. I remember it as quite nice, but whether it supports your exotic interface is another question. I have a Thinkpad with firewire, but I've never had anything to plug into it.

I browsed the AV Linux site yesterday - looks interesting. I might at least give the live ISO a go and see if there is any miraculous support for said exotic device ... ;-)

The last time I tried avlinux it was based on debian squeeze and was 32 bit only. Along with quirks for the hardware I used it on. By default I had to unplug and replug the usb HID's (keyboard and mouse) to get them to work. Although I eventually fiddled with udev from the next generation of debian to get it to work without that annoyance. It was very optimized for that type of setup. Quite responsive. But limited with the age of the distro for much beyond a dedicated offline audio distro.
