Multiplexing mp3 and h264 in mp4

Has anyone had luck multiplexing mp3 and h264 in a mp4 container? I'm currently taking raw AVI and muxing it using x264/mp3lame with mencoder in an AVI container. I then avidump and use mp4creator to multiplex. This creates a corrupt mp4 that crashes Nautilus and Totem and throws "Error 50" when played in Quicktime.
