[SOLVED] Multimonitor setup, 1 monitor won't work

Ok, I have a GeForce FX 5600 and a Permedia 2 in my box. I have xorg configured so that both monitors attached to the FX 5600 work and x starts, however the one attached to the PCI card does not work. When I auto configure, this is what the auto-generated file says about the PCI card (note: the PCI cardworks correctly on the auto-generated one, but only 1 of my Geforce monitors works, and everything is low-rez and 8bit color).

Code:

Section "Device"
   Identifier "Card1"
   Driver "glint"
   VendorName "3DLabs"
   BoardName "Permedia II 2D+3D"
   BusID "PCI:1:9:0"
EndSection

This is my current xorg.conf file:

Also... Xinerama did not work. It just made the two monitors that are working 1 big screen. My guess is driver issues or some kind of BusID issue. If you need any more info, feel free to PM me or IM me, or just post here, I'll be checking back frequently. Thank you.

Post your entire auto configured Xorg.conf.

Also, do you have xinerama enabled. I didn't see it in your server options so you prolly need to either use
Quote:
startx -- +xinerama
or add
Quote:
+xinerama
to the end of the last line in '/etc/X11/xdm/Xservers' or wherever Xservers resides on your machine.
Mine reads
Quote:
0: local /usr/X11R6/bin/X +xinerama
The nVidia card has hardware support for multiple screens, so it doesn't need Xinerama, but the other card doesn't and the nVidia hardware support only covers nVidia cards so... you need Xinerama, which the auto configure would have enabled.

just adding -- +xinerama at the end of startx didn't work, just made the two screens I had become one. Here is the autoconfig'd file.

Ok...
Code:
Screen 1 "Screen1" RightOf "Screen0"
See that '1' in there. Right before "Screen1" That's the Xinerama screen number. Any screens that have the same number are treated as one screen. If you give them each their own number then each one recieves it's own destop. In your old xorg.conf that number wasn't used so Xinerama treated your screens as one.

Anyhow, here's a config that should work... I hope...
Code:
#ServerLayout
#Note that each screen has a number imediately before the screen name.
# This number tells Xinerama which screens to assign to which desktop.
# If you want to combine two monitors into one desktop then I would recommend
# reading nVidia's tutorial on TwinView. TwinView gives you hardware screen meshing
# essentially, if you use TwinView then X will see one double-wide screen where your
# GeForce is.
Section "ServerLayout"
    Identifier "Horizontal 3 Screen Layout"
    Screen 0 "Screen0" 0 0
    Screen 1 "Screen1" RightOf "Screen0"
    Screen 2 "Screen2" LeftOf "Screen0"
#I noticed that in your old layout both screens 1 & 2 were 'RightOf "Screen 0"'
#This would put them as occupying the same spot

Oh, I almost forgot. Just out of curiosity could you post the output of 'Xorg -scanpci'

brief up so it's easier for me to find the post while I'm trying out your suggestions. I've been out of town the last 2 days, so we'll see how these work.

Okay, it didn't work. I have your config in there exactly now, and only my left monitor works. By the way, the reason my screens section is weird is for 2 reasons. 1: My left monitor (16inch one connected to my geforce) can't go above 1024x768 for some reason, and my right monitor is 15 inches, so much above 1024x768 it gets almost too small to be readable. So I just choose to keep everything there. Also my biggest 17inch monitor is a tad out of focus, so lower resolutions help me to see text on that screen, lol. I think the monitor section may not be correct, because I can move my mouse over to the other screens, but they are both blank. How do I find the exact HorizSync and VertSync rates of my monitors?

Also... I accidently deleted my old xorg.conf file, is there a program I can use to just copy and paste my old one that I posted here into a file so that I don't have to go through and delete useless lines of code (like in abiword). you can't just copy/past with nano, no that would be too easy *sigh*.

Solved!!! Okay... here's the thing, I used Kierl_andon's config he sent me, but that didn't work. it turns out that under the device section when you put "screen 0" or "screen 1" you should NOT do that on cards that don't have dual heads, that is to tell the video card which output to go from. So I took that out, and it also turned out that I had my refresh rate way to high for my monitor on the right.... so here is the final config file.

Code:
Section "ServerLayout"
    Identifier "Horizontal 3 Screen Layout"
    Screen 0 "Screen0" 0 0
