Multi-Volume Tape Backup Question

I am trying to backup onto more than one tape. Does anyone have any suggestions on software that would be good to use to do a multi-volume backup with some type of compression? I have done some research into some options such as pax or cpio. Let me know of any suggestions on doing this.

well
you could use the cmd
tar --totals -H pax -cMvf /dev/st0

cd into the dir you wish to back up . If the dir is greater than the capacity of your tape
the M switch will then : Fill tape 1
and hollar back:
the return from console
Prepare volume #2 for `/dev/st0' and hit return:

I am not using compression in the above
