MTP fails on Debian Streach with Samsung Galaxy devices
I have been trying to get MTP working with my new Samsung tablet and Samsung phone, but to no avail. It seems to work on my old Hipstreet tablet, though. I keep getting: (from mtp-detect)
libmtp version: 1.1.13 Listing raw device(s) Device 0 (VID=04e8 and PID=6860) is a Samsung Galaxy models (MTP). Found 1 device(s): Samsung: Galaxy models (MTP) (04e8:6860) @ bus 2, dev 28 Attempting to connect device(s) ignoring libusb_claim_interface() = -6PTP_ERROR_IO: failed to open session, trying again after resetting USB interface LIBMTP libusb: Attempt to reset device ignoring libusb_claim_interface() = -6LIBMTP PANIC: failed to open session on second attempt Unable to open raw device 0 OK. The device seems to automount, but hangs when you try to access it. I am seeing a lot of errors like: usb 2-1.6: usbfs: process 4856 (events) did not claim interface 0 before use Every thread I have checked so far has failed to resolved the problem. I don't have time to learn the code for MTP to fix it myself, so I have completely removed MTP from my system, as it is useless for me. I hope someone either finds a solution, or that I can warn others not to waste their time trying to get it to work, at least with a Samsung anything. |
Hmmm!
I have a offline Debian testing, it's offline because I can't build a driver for the Asus USB51 wireless dongle since kernel 4.15, I can get tethering with my Galaxy S4 once in a blue moon, but blue moons are rare. Your post had me digging and I found something that may work in your case, maybe even mine in regards to getting a reliable tethering. Apparently we can install gMPT from Sid repositories, have you tried it? |
Not as of yet. I'll check when I get a chance.

i recently set this up on a debian stable system.
it was - i think it was working already, or trivial to set up. if you use a desktop environment your filemanager probably also uses gvfs, and all you need is gvfs-mtp which i believe is contained in the gvfs-backends package. |
Tried compiling gMTP, the program runs, but wont detect the phone or tablet, then hangs or crashes.
Tried gvfs-backends, no joy. |
