Msn with proxy? Gaim, amsn don't work!

Hi,

Does anyone know of an msn client that connects through an http proxy? I have installed amsn, gaim, ayttm, kopete. None work. I went through the list of im packages at gentoo.org and read through each description and none is suitable. ( http://www.gentoo.org/dyn/pkgs/net-im/index.xml )

I have tried setting the proxy in both gaim (in protocol section as well as global preferences) and in amsn (latest version from portage) but it just doesn't work. It immediately says could not connect. I think there is something wrong with my linux network configuration but i don't know where to look.

On the other hand, konqueror connects to the net so i guess at least my proxy and gateway settings are ok.

If anyone has used msn through a proxy ( i can use only port 80 and a few more below 1024) please let me know. Msn works in Windows.

Thanks in advance,

:)

Are you sure IMs are allowed to connect trough the proxy?? (both under linux or windows)? because many times network administrators lock those ports (via proxy or router)

RockmanExe, I would think that it is allowed by the sys admin, because it works under windows. Have you tried Everybuddy [the new ayttm], I haven't looked into it much, but it's another IM.

i used to have the same issue with amsn under linux, even though i was able to surf the net and browse the network with my linux box. I got an never ending 'connecting' message with the penguin walking forever hehehe. What worked for me in that time was to assing a diffe

sorry, for that incomplete message. What i was saying is:
i assigned a different ip address to my pc and it finally got connected (different segment).

Hi Ho_10, ayttm is what everybuddy is now. But on your suggestion I tried everybuddy too. It does not work.
Rockman, i don't have the option of changing my ip. Besides everyone has to go thru the same proxy, just their gateways change, so the limitations of the proxy remain, whichever ip i am assigned.
Only windows can support IM thru proxy i guess!

are u sure you are using the correct modules? the best thing to do here to narrow down the problem is to ask your sysad what is happening to your proxy access whenever u use everybuddy under linux.

also, within your system, use a packet sniffer (like ethereal) and watch what's happning.

hornokplease 09-09-2003 02:31 AM

Which modules should i check for correctness? And how should i go about it? I will search for ethereal and use it. Thanks.

Also is there some way to check if my proxy supports the CONNECT command? That may be why all the messengers are failing. I cannot use telnet to check it since my proxy does not run a telnet server.

Also my sysad is more or less non existent. This is a small goverment network and someone from outside the organisation set it up. The proxy runs NT4 and Microsoft Proxy Server and no one is allowed to touch it. The only people who touch it know nothing. So i have to find a way around the existing system.

hm...all I can say is that it may be that all of those IM clients don't support a Microsoft Proxy. It shouldn't really make a difference - what kind of authentication does your proxy use? For example, I know that Mozilla releases .14 and ealier don't support NTLM authentication..so I had to use a NTLM APS [see sourceforge]

hornokplease 09-09-2003 02:56 AM

I don't need to type in a user name or a password or select an authentication type. So how do i find out the type of authentication it uses? Is it possible it uses no authentication?

i've googled for this:

well, u've mentioned that under windows u can connect to the messenger servers. never tried MS proxy before so i'm clueless here.

i have used proxy with ymessenger in linux and it works all the time but the same does not happen with Gaim. though an optio of proxy is there but it does not work. i think there should be a solution but depends who knows it.:D

bratac 09-09-2003 04:57 AM

I have a similar problem too. Unfortunately I cannot offer a solution, but a hint:
When Gaim connects (in my case to MSN) through HTTP proxy, it tries:
CONNECT messenger.hotmail.com:1863 HTTP/1.0
and the proxy responds:
HTTP/1.0 403 Forbidden

But when under Windows the MSN Messenger does the same:
POST http://gateway.messenger.hotmail.com/gateway/gateway.dll?Action=open&Server=NS&IP=messenger.hotmail.com HTTP/1.1

i.e. it uses some sort of HTTP gateway... now the question is how to make Gaim (or any other Linux messenger) to do that same...

Bratac.

MSN is stoping supporting msn messanger in gaim very soon .

They are sending messages all the time nowadays

Which is good for gabber and the other linux instant messangers as an advertisment cool move :) :)
