Look man maybe maybe u should read da docz and stuffz like dat for da distro u wanna go wit.
Oh, and like btw, da most gnarly chattin proggy has gotz to be GAIM. Sheeeeeeeet itz l33t.
First, I'd like to say that I'm quite new to Linux too. I tried a couple of years ago to get started with RH9 but I was quite disappointed with some hardware support. Then, I gave it another try with FC4, bad support again... So I'd agree with Kamakino:

First thing I'd say is get a newer distro. It'll make everything easier.
Then, I would say that getting a newer distribution would be a good way to start things clean without having to recompile the Kernel by yourself (and maybe face some pitfalls...)
Since January I installed Kubuntu (I prefer KDE over GNOME) and suddenly, I am very pleased with the ease of use of this distribution. Package management works more smoothly (it is Debian based). btw, Kopete is already included...
If you're not happy with the packages supplied on the Kubuntu repositories, you can always download source. Theses sites provide a lot a good open source tarballs to get you started:

You are still using a very old distribution. Where are you getting those from? Is somebody giving it away for free or something? . I think Mandrake 9.1 is about the same old as Redhat 9.0.
The problem you are getting is exactly because your Gaim version is too old. Microsoft has changed the protocols since then. You options are: upgrade Gaim to a newer version or upgrade your distribution. Since I got the feeling that you are really new to Linux, the easiest way for you is to use a new distribution. It is just easier to have a fully operational system to learn Linux in a slow step then fixing an old broken system.
Since you mention Kubuntu, you can get Kubuntu here:
