MSN Messenger in Linux

Hi,
Just a quick question. I use MSN Messenger quite often under XP and am gradually changing over to Fedora 2.6 entirely. Ive come across a few IM programs in Fedora but they do not seem to provide the same features and support. Is there anyway of downloading a Linux version of the program or running MSN Messenger under Fedora?

gaim, kopete, everybuddy and so on... try google for more.

You can run MSN Messenger under Wine but it sucks, I've tried but as far as open source goes, nobody has yet made a program comparable to msmsgs...

I use Gaim until a time when MSN runs under Wine with some sort of respectable speed.

amsn has been the best msn messenger clone i've played with, imo. i like it better than gaim and kepote. but that's my personal preference.

I personally have to agree with megaspaz. amsn (which supports a plugin system and a skin system) has almost all the features that msn messenger6.2(and with the plugin system, msn 7.0) has. It is also constantly being updated.

http://amsn.sourceforge.net/ is their website

Indeed, since I found out about aMsn, I prefer it over the 'ordinary' MSN messenger. I think it's more secure too.

plus: you have silent logon, which can be really useful (though I think messenger7.0 has that too now).

I use MSN with Crossover Office. Seems to work great.

Don't know what features I am missing with Kopete, compared to Amsn (it IS a _very_ good MSN clone!), but since I use all media: Yahoo, AIM, ICQ and MSN (Jabber too, but no buddies yet, lol), I stick to Kopete... on Windows it's Trillian.. both great products..

If you indeed need a feature Kopete doesn't have (I don't miss any, it sends messages? than it's fine enough lol, though Kopete is very sophisticated imho), amsn should be your choice.

Cheers

aMsn is wonderful

I'd also like to point out that Webmessenger (webmessenger.msn.com) works on Linux. It's basically MSN messenger in a web browser. Despite the main page saying 'your browser is not supported' (Firefox) and you need Windows, I got it working. Just enable popups for that domain.

And oh yes, I also use Kopete, and previously Gaim.

Edit: Oops, I mean enable popups for webmessenger.

Winno,
good tip!

I don't know why one even try to compare either Gaim or Kopete with MSN.
It's like "lamborgini" and "renault Cleo" What's wrong with you people:rolleyes:  ;)
Gaim alone outfeatures MSN by 100%. I run on mine ICQ, MSN, Yahoo and IRC altogether
Can it be done on any M$ product? Negative!!!

all my contacts are with msn messenger. i don't have any contacts in aim or yahoo. nor do i use icq or irc. nor do i know anyone else who does. why use gaim or kepote for just msn messenger? amsn reproduces what i need. not other features that i don't need because no one else in my contacts list uses anything else. what's wrong with you?

matt_com911 12-25-2004 08:23 PM

Yeah SlackerLX, why drive a the Lamborghini when you dont feel safe in it and you're fine with your Renault? Im sure Gaim is great, but im much more comfortable with the MSN enviroment. Plus, like megaspaz I only have .net passport contacts (@hotmail.com) and don't know anyone who has anything different. Does Gaim support contact pictures and the same emoticons as MSN? They're small things implemented properly in MSN Messenger 6.0 and I would like to be able to use them in Linux. I think I'll try amsn for the time being and see how it goes. Thanks for everyones input on the matter.
