I would agree that is the better of the two for MSN, I didn't even know GAIN worked for MSN I thought it was strictly AOL, ICQ.

KMess, Trillian+Wine, there's many things you could try. :)
IIRC Gaim has an msn plugin, now loaded by default.
A version should be on your install disks.

http://amsn.sourceforge.net
i use 0.8, it's good and problem-free. the only thing is that you need to have tk-8.3.5-88 installed (or some other version, perhaps, i have thisone), wich provides you /usr/bin/wish, wish is needed, since aMSN is tk/tcl application and wish is tk interpreter (sorry for the messy text... ) :)

another that is good is kopete.

v2lk 06-15-2003 09:57 AM

ofcource, if you have a 386 or smth. like that, you can always use centericq, wich is an instant messenger of many protocols, running on console, using ncurses.

GAIM sucks...no file transfers...so useless

Hope that helps....

DrOzz 06-15-2003 11:24 AM

actually on the topic of msn file transfer...i use amsn, and when i try to make a file transfer it just sits and send fails...i tried sending a picture file for testing to various people who use both windows and linux boxes, and there was no success rate at all...do i have to manually open that port somewheres, or does anyone have an idea why it won't work?

Proud 06-15-2003 01:08 PM

Yeah, the chat port and the ft port and the hotmail checking port are all different iirc, but some firewall graphical frontends like Guarddog have an option to enable eg MSN IM and all related ports. :)

v2lk 06-15-2003 01:15 PM

probably, you just need to open port 6891 by configuring your firewall (that is, moding /etc/sysconfig/iptables or /etc/sysconfig/ipchains in the case of redhat for example).

DrOzz 06-15-2003 07:35 PM

ok i have tried and tried but i cannot succeed...i added the following to /etc/sysconfig/iptables:

-A RH-Lokkit-0-50-INPUT -p tcp -m tcp --dport 6891 -j ACCEPT

but no way does it work....any ideas?

yowwww 06-15-2003 10:22 PM

Mine won't work to send files either, but then again, I can't send files with anything else either due to my router. I have opening ports all kinds of times and it never works.

BTW, for anyone who is interested, I have written an install guide for Amsn in red hat 9. See my guide and look at the Red Hat 9 page for more details.
