mqueue has grown too large

My /var/spool/mqueue directory has hundreds of thousands of files in it. Some are months old.

Why aren't these messages sent or delete?

Some of them have 550 errors where the user is unknown. Why would that email stay in the queue when it's trying to go to a domain on my server which has no user. Should it not get deleted?

What can I do to reduce the queue size?

Please help.
