Mplayer won't play aac files

My Mplayer won't play aac files, but it will play mp3's without any problems. When I attempt to play a .mp4 (aac), mplayer will just flash and shutdown. I had all the plugins installed for xmms, but I thought it was extremely unstable, so I switched to mplayer.

When I installed mplayer, I used "apt-get install mplayer"

Could I be missing a plugin, and if so where do I find the appropriate one to fix this?

Thank-you so much,
MooMooMilk

you would be better off NOT using apt-get.......download the source and compile it yourself!!!
