mplayer trouble with mpegs

I am having so much trouble playing mpegs over mplayer.
Previously when I try to play a mpeg file, mplayer used to load up the file and then pause at
the point
alsa-init: 1 soundcard found, using: default
for about 1 min and then it will play the mpeg file fine.

But suddenly now, it has completely stopped playing mpeg files. It just pauses at the above mentioned point and never starts playing the video.

Here is a typical output

Code:
ditya[MyMusic] 69 > mplayer minivcd.mpg

This is where it stops.

Here is the output from 'file' command

ditya[MyMusic] 70 > file minivcd.mpg
minivcd.mpg: MPEG sequence, v1, system multiplex

BTW I am running fc3 (I never had any problems when I had fc2) . I have been able to play other formats fairly easily. Its just mpeg that gives me so much trouble.
I have tried using -vo xv flag. But that doesn't change anything.

Any help would be really appreciated.

Is this under KDE?

If it is halting at the also init then changing the vo divice will not be of much help. Try:

mplayer -ao help

and choose another audio output device and see if that helps.

Thanks for the suggestion guys! I am indeed using KDE.

I tried it with
mplayer -ao arts minivcd.mpg
and it plays without any trouble!

Thanks for the tip!
