Mplayer: synchronising subtitles

hi, i'm playing a divx movie on gmplayer and download a .sub file for the subtitles. the problem i have, is that their not synchronised with the movie. is there a way to synchronize them? i donwnloaded many different .sub files, but none of them works fine. is there a way to fix this in the gui, or should i do something in the command line? thanx

While playing the movie you can use the x/z keys to increase/decrease the sub delay in increments of 100ms. I don't know how to set it permanently however.

the x and z keys are a shortcut for something i can do in the preferences too. but that does not synch enough. i wrote a programm in c++ that simply modifies de values for each line in a .sub file, but it seems that my .sub is impossible to synch. thanx for your help!
