Mplayer substitute?

I still cannot get the Mplayer plug-ins working in Mozilla. I even had a linux-friendly IT service look at it, and they can't get it working. Do I have any other choices to play windows media formats in either Mozilla (or any other browser)?

There's also xine, which also has a browser plug-in, but it never worked as well for me as the mplayer one does.

I managed to get the mplayer plugin working with mozilla, but it doesn't play streams from sites like MTV, so I feel a bit disappointed.
