MPLAYER source in UBUNTU

Hi.
I have mplayer from ubuntu's repository, but it's not working perfectly. Specially with my VCD discs.

I formated the pc, and it's still the same. So, the problem is with the relationship between the system and the package it offers in its repository.

So, I decided to install mplayer from source, to be sure it would work perfectly.
the problem is, it's failing!
CAn you help me?

'config.h' and 'config.mak' contain your configuration options.
Note: If you alter theses files (for instance CFLAGS) MPlayer may no longer
compile *** DO NOT REPORT BUGS if you tweak these files ***

'make' will now compile MPlayer and 'make install' will install it.
Note: On non-Linux systems you might need to use 'gmake' instead of 'make'.

Please check mtrr settings at /proc/mtrr (see DOCS/HTML/en/video.html#mtrr)

Check configure.log if you wonder why an autodetection failed (make sure
development headers/packages are installed).

NOTE: The --enable-* parameters unconditionally force options on, completely
skipping autodetection. This behavior is unlike what you may be used to from
autoconf-based configure scripts that can decide to override you. This greater
level of control comes at a price. You may have to provide the correct compiler
and linker flags yourself.
If you used one of these options (except --enable-gui and similar ones that
turn on internal features) and experience a compilation or linking failure,
make sure you have passed the necessary compiler/linker flags to configure.

If you suspect a bug, please read DOCS/HTML/en/bugreports.html.

You are compiling from source as root I see. The first 2 steps should be done as the user, or your user account won't be able to run the program. You will also only be able to run the non-gui of mplayer from the above.
Code:
vo_ivtv.c:79: error: storage size of 'sd' isn't known
vo_ivtv.c:80: error: storage size of 'sd1' isn't known
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=558538&page=14 suggests using
Code:
./configure --disable-ivtv
http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php...&postcount=138 has other suggestions for places to look for more information.

Question: Why aren't you getting mplayer from your repositories via Synaptic?

I have always installed softwares as root, speacially because most of them won't install correctly as user due to the lack of privilegies to write in /usr/local for exemple. But I think you are write, because these writtings will only happen after "make install", right?
Thanks for the tip. The only strange thing is that, I have always installed softwares like this, and I never had any problem using them as user later.

Anyway, you say I should: CONFIGURE and MAKE as user, and MAKE INSTALL as root, right? Should I do that only to be able to use mplayer as user, or because it should solve the ERRORS I got?

I think the very first line of my first post, after "HI", answers that:

I'll try ./configure --disable-ivtv and see if that will solve the errors. Right now I'm under Windows OS.

I missed the bit about not playing the VCDs - are you getting an error or is it a playback problem?

Yes, ./configure & make should be as the user and then do sudo make install. The compilation as you have it will not have a gui, by the way.

http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...player-726419/

If you search for this error you will find a few pages mentioning it, in many forums, but no solution. So I gave up. Anyway, installatation from source should work anywhere if you have all deps. :@

./configure --disable-ivtv
is giving me a make with no end! Just looping I think. overflow.

Hi doraimom,

If you are compiling MPlayer from source I would suggest a newer version than the 2007 release. Have a look at:

HowTo: Install the very latest MPlayer under Jaunty Jackalope
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1081070

and this might be the answer for you. BTW it is more conventional in Ubuntu to use sudo for 'make install' but './configure' and 'make' as an ordinary user. (oops I see that has already been mentioned!)

Andrew
