Talking mplayer sound problems on slack 10.2

Hi,
my mplayer works just fine in graphical mode, i use sdl driver configured for alsa (in settings->audio->sdl->driver configuration->alsa), but how do i mention this in the command line? i tried this
mplayer -ao sdl <filename> but how do i specifically mention it to use alsa?
also, (i'm still a newbie & it may sound stupid), but can i run videos on mplayer on console i.e., without having to run X ?

why do you want to use sdl at all? can you not just use alsa directly with -ao alsa? if you do need sdl, then i think it'd be -ao sdl:alsa and yes you can certainly run it without X, i do. just use a non-X -vo e.g. vesa or fbdev. actually sdl is pretty good at non-x to, so -vo sdl might suit
