Mplayer sound issue

When I click on some media, Mplayer is all muted? I have mplayer installed at /usr/lib/mplayer and can see all the video codecs fine but I have no sound

I had sound but now it all of a sudden went away when I installed codecs from mplayers web site called "essential codecs package".

What can I check?

Does sound work from other apps, like xmms? What types of media do play correctly and which don't?

Also, check that your audio drivers are set correctly in mplayer.

to make the essential pack of codecs work you have to recompile mplayer. and it would be really helpful if youd include some mplayer output.. otherwise this is just guessing.
