Mplayer question....

Hi all!

I'm running mplayer 1.0pre2-3.2.2, running it from eterm (not GUI compiled).
It is a way to run it in background? Cause when i run it, i have the mplayer's output window, and the eterm. I'd like to have that eterm free to work with.
I tryed to run it with && at the end of the instruction (mplayer foo.avi && ) and with &, and neither of both work. It just hangs until i stop the process (ctrl+c).

Thnx in advance

Hello Hammett,

1) One solution...
What desktop are you using? GNOME or KDE or XFCE whatever?
Usually you have a way in the desktop to launch a command without 'wasting' a terminal.
For instance in the Gnome-panel: "Actions->Execute an application" I think it's called in English.
In KDE there is the same. In XFCE you just right-click on the background and you can chose "Execute" or something.
The problem with this solution is that you don't have in the "Execute" GUI the facilities that you have in a terminal, for instance auto-completion of the file name and possibility to explore the directories.

2) Another solution
Use XFTREE for instance to explore the directories and so on. When you found the video you want to watch, just right-click on it and select mplayer <name of the video> in the pop-up menu, or select "Open with..." and ask for mplayer or whatever player you're using (XINE is good as well).

Hope this helps.
Cheers,

Hi sylvain_gnu !!!

I'm using Fluxbox 0.9.9, and it has that "execute application" you talk about (Fluxbox command). Funny thing is that for some reason i don't know, it does not work. However, i edited rox's file association to launch mplayer with movie files. So, thanks you for the help, definitely you put the light on my problem

Cheers!
