mplayer produces choppy dvd playback

I'm trying to use mplayer to play DVDs, however, I get really like a skip or hangup every 5 or six seconds
Some on suggested enabling DMA on my cdrom/dvd drive........but hdparm wouldn't let me.

Has anyone had experience with fine tuning DVD playback? I'm not sure what else to do.

I'm running a P3 600
with a geforce2 MX (128MB) (with the real NVIDIA drivers)

luchobucho, when you tried to set the DMA where you logged in as root?

You have to be root to be able to make this change.

Check out the link below. It shows how to change the DMA.
