mplayer problems
 

I've got mplayer to work pretty well, with the exception of playing a movie in full screen mode. Also, it says that my system is too slow to play this. But what's weird is that I just recently changed from RH9 to Slackware 8.1 and in Rh9 it was working perfectly and I never had any problems with watching a movie in full screen mode or had it say that my system is too slow. Can anyone help? One more thing, at the mplayer hq site, it says that if you have an "ati" card to use the xvidix video output, but I could only watch movies using the x11 video output. Might that be the problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

Secondly, if you can give us some errors or what happens when you use full screen mode, that might help us out? And are you running mplayer using the GUI or from terminal? More details please.

Possible reasons, problems, workarounds:
- Most common: broken/buggy _audio_ driver
- Try -ao sdl or use ALSA 0.5 or the OSS emulation of ALSA 0.9.
- Experiment with different values for -autosync, 30 is a good start.
- Slow video output
- Try a different -vo driver (-vo help for a list) or try -framedrop!
- Slow CPU
- Don't try to play a big DVD/DivX on a slow CPU! Try -hardframedrop.
- Broken file
- Try various combinations of -nobps -ni -forceidx -mc 0.
- Slow media (NFS/SMB mounts, DVD, VCD etc)
- Try -cache 8192.
- Are you using -cache to play a non-interleaved AVI file?
- Try -nocache.
Read DOCS/video.html and DOCS/sound.html for tuning/speedup tips.
If none of this helps you, read DOCS/bugreports.html.

tuxrad: I suggest you don't hijack the thread. delete your post (or edit it to one line) and start a new thread.

safil: for testing, try different video outputs besides x11. For most people, the -vo x11 is the slowest visual display there is. It's much less bad, however, if you don't scale to fullscreen.

Let me suggest several other video output modes that OUGHT to use the hardware scaling of your video card, thereby reducing CPU usage practically to nil.

I usually use -vo xv. e.g, "mplayer filename.avi -vo xv". For most people, this is likely to make the most sense. "-vo dga" should probably also be good. I don't have experience with xvidix, but if you have it set up and working, it should be much, MUCH better than -vo x11.

Once you figure out which video output is best for you, go to ~/.mplayer/config (make this file if it doesn't already exist) and place a line in it specifying your favorite default video output. For example, my ~/.mplayer/config has a line in it that says "vo=xv".

Are those video drivers already installed or do I have to download them? If I do where do I get them?

Run "xvinfo".

What happens when you run mplayer with -vo xv?

Or for that matter, dga...?

Have you installed the ATi drivers from www.ati.com ?? If so, try to run mplayer -vo xv. That should fix the problem. If you already have installed these drivers, sorry, but i don't know what con be the source of the problem :(
