MPlayer problems

I recently downloaded and installed MPlayer successfully. 3 out of the 4 available video drivers actually work when i'm logged in as root. But when I'm not logged in as root it only lets me use 2.

I would'nt mind normally, but the one it doesnt let me use is the best one! Is there any simple way around this before i reinstall it?

sorry, these are the four drivers i can choose from....

xmga Matrox G200/G4x0/G550 overlay in X11 window (using /dev/mga_vid)
xv X11/Xv
x11 X11 (XImage/Shm)
xvidix X11 (VIDIX)

X11 and xvidix work when I'm logged in as root.
X11 works when i'm logged in as a different user

well xvidix uses direct hardware access, which normally shouldn't be avaible to non priveliedged users. it you add a couple of -v's to the mplauer cmd line you should be able to see the /dev/ entry which is not allowing access. However xvidix output isn't too great, it's certainly better than X11, but what happens with xv output? that's the most standard / best output available. if that gives errors, what does xvinfo say? most up to date cards should have superb xv support (along with an updated XFree86 installation of course)

well, when trying to play a video file using the xv driver i get the message....

Error opening/initializing the video_out(-vo) device

it gives me that message as both root or user.
