what is your output/errors in the command line?

have you tried updating to the newest version of mplayer?

are you running the command mplayer or gmplayer?

rpmseek.com will have the link to rpm file for mplayer

try getting up-to-date codecs for mplayer.

extract them to /usr/lib/win32 and see what happens?

also, is this happening on ONE .avi file, or all .avi files? Perhaps your video file is corrupt?
