MPlayer Problem #1

Using Mandrake 9.1

* Can't install without libpng.so.2.
* Loooked up libpng.so.2 on google
* downloaded file libpng-1.0.14-0.7x.4.i386
* tried installing the file but Mandrake says everything is already installed. I even downloaded older versions - says the same thing.

What should I do? Format reinstall? give up?

Did libpng install to the correct place? Usually mplayer will look for it in /usr/lib and sometimes it might install to /usr/local/lib
I would check to make sure that isn't the case, either moving it over or creating a link to the new place its installed to.

How are you isntalling, RPM or source? Usually your going to have better luck installing by source.

I just double clicked the file.

Do you mean how did I install Mplayer?

Yes to both now. I'm assuming you installed by RPM then.

Check to see where libpng resides at.

libpng.so is located in my /usr/lib/ directory.
now what?

No u dont have to do anything so drastic! just uninstall whatever u did install.MPlayer comes in the Mandrake 9.1 CD,GUI n lots of skins.to install,---> Mndrk control centre---->Software management----->add packages, just search for "mplayer" it would show,then install it.also remember the command for launching mplayer is "gmplayer" not mplayer:)

yeah there r quite a few hidden things like kppp in the CDs which dont show.it wont show in the "add packages" search if it is installed but then it would show in the "remove package" search:)

The one Mandrake installed for me is version 0.90. The newest Mplayer version is 0.91. Is it worth upgrading or should I leave it alone and stick with 0.90?

Just so people know, I installed codecs from here:

http://www.piorunek.pl/~dominik/linux/pkgs/mplayer/

I downloaded the "All-in-One Essential Codec Pack" and I am able to play Quicktime movie files and so forth. This MPlayer is great!
