mplayer plugin 2.4 in mozilla 1.6 under debian sid

hey guys,
i recently upgraded my debian sid install and apparently my mplayer plugin was also upgraded to version 2.4.
i dont know which version i had before this but it worked perfectly for me.I could see all the quicktime videos i wanted to see. However the new plugin does not seem to be working(even on the videos i have seen earlier).
When i click on the video...the screen pops up....and a couple of seconds worth of video is played b4 it stops.I look over in my gkrellm net monitors and i see no net activity which probably means that the video file is not being streeamed onto my machine(yes they are big enough to not finish downloading in a couple of seconds).
i dont really know how to debug this error since i dont know how to run the player with debugging options.
i would really appreciate is someone could help me here.I have a class i am taking which requires me to see these videos and i would hate to have to reinstall windows(or to go to any other windows/mac machine) on my machine just to see these videos.
