mplayer no volume control in Slack 12.0

Hi, I compiled mplayer (like i've done may times before on my laptop) and it works great except when I use the 0 and 9
keys for volume control, I get the OSD bar for volume on screen moving up/down respectively but no volume change.

Any suggestions?

thanks
